CATANIA & ACI TREZZA BIKE TOUR

CATANIA & ACI TREZZA BIKE TOUR

Departure from Catania city center.

Ride through the streets of the beautiful historic center, destroyed and rebuilt as many as nine times on the very same site. This unusual feature makes Catania a city of a thousand faces! A treasure chest of relics from different historical eras, buried and then brought back to light… keeper of countless secrets still to be revealed.

We will leave the historic center and follow coastal roads until we reach Aci Castello. The name comes from the village’s landmark: a castle built on a lava basalt rock, formed by an underwater eruption about 500,000 years ago. The castle, surrounded by many legends, now houses the Civic Museum.

We will then move on to Aci Trezza, a fishermen’s village overlooking the Isola Lachea and the Cyclops Sea Stacks (Faraglioni). These lava formations were created by the same underwater eruption that formed the cliff of Aci Castello. Greek mythology tells that the Faraglioni were boulders thrown by Polyphemus at Ulysses after being blinded in Homer’s “Odyssey”. In more recent times, they were the setting for Verga’s novel “I Malavoglia”.

After this dive into history, we will stop for a swim or a granita.

Return to Catania city center.
